H is for Hot Air Balloon: ABC Wednesday Round #3

What a magnificent photo opportunity awaited me when I decided to attend the 23rd annual Atlantic International Balloon Fiesta last weekend at Sussex, NB. It was my first time attending and I have marked it on my calendar and hope to be in attendance again next September! For information on the balloons and balloonists just click on the Balloon Fiesta link.
The excitement started to rise as the balloons gradually filled and the crowd waited to see which one would be first to lift off the ground.

A couple of shape balloons, Jumping Jack and Mr. Peanut, were real favourites of the little ones in the crowd.

D is for Dinosaur: ABC Wednesday Round #3

This post is all about , "Once upon a time..." when dinosaurs roamed the lands of Alberta, Canada. I am also delving into the past by using some of my old 35mm photos taken sometimes in the 1990's. This first photo above is of a replica of a Tyrannosaurus Rex standing in front of the tourist bureau in Milk River, Alberta. In the background of this picture are perhaps what some might consider more modern day dinosaurs, those of grain elevators, many of which have now disappeared from the landscape of this prairie province.

These last two photos of dinosaurs were taken at the Prehistoric Park at the Calgary Zoo. This park features life size re-creations allowing visitors to walk through the land of southern Alberta as it may have been millions of years ago.

C is for Canyons: ABC Wednesday Round #3

There are two majestic canyons located in the Red Deer River Valley near Drumheller, Alberta. One is called Horseshoe Canyon, named for its shape, and the other, Horse Thief Canyon, named for the horse stealing activities reputed to have taken place there. I'm not sure which these pictures are of but I think perhaps they may be one of each, Horseshoe Canyon being the one at the top.

'BIG' Fiddle for Maniac Monday

The theme for Manic Monday this week is BIG! Standing 14 feet tall in the community of Harvey Station, NB, the home town of internationally renowned fiddler Don Messer (1909-1973); this large fiddle was built as a tribute to him and his contribution to music.

Thursday Challenge: Kite Over Saskatchewan

After reading of this week's theme I found this old 35 mm photo I had taken of a kite in 1993. We had stopped to take a break from our road trip in Saskatchewan and decided to do a bit of kite flying in the wide open spaces of the prairies.

Colourful Grain Elevators

This photo was taken in Munson, Alberta in 1993. I don't think these grain elevators are any longer in existence.

Storm Clouds Over Two Small Prairie Towns: Sky Watch Friday

Dark and threatening storm clouds roll ominously above in the big sky over these two small Alberta prairie towns. Many of the signature grain elevators seen on the horizons once lent identification to these communities at a distant glance but today very few of these tall sentinels remain. These 35mm photos were taken in 1993.

Y is for Yellow Fields of Canola: ABC Wednesday

Alberta is one of Canada's Prairie Provinces and shown here is a canola crop growing as far as the eye can see. This is a wondrous sight under the big, blue, prairie skies and during a road trip to Alberta in 1993 I took many photos. These two photos have been scanned from 35mm prints.

Wheel to the Sky: Sky Watch Friday

This wheel offered a bird's eye view to those who cared to take a ride! Also below, some chose to view the sky from the top of this lighthouse. While attending Canada Day Festivities on the first I immediatley thought of Sky Watch when I saw these two great views!

V is for Vespra Crossing: ABC Wednesday

I learned only last summer of this beautiful old, arched, stone railroad bridge that crosses the Little Yoho Stream at Vespra, Sunbury County, NB. It probably would have been built circa 1868 -69 when the old European and North American Railway line was being built between South Bay, NB to the border at St. Croix, NB and Vanceboro, Maine. Built of stone, in the time period before bridges were made of iron and steel, the keystone, seen at the center top of the arch, held the bridge together, making these stone bridges very strong. I doubt if this beautiful arched bridge is visited often for it was not that easy to access. First we had walked down the railroad tracks but as the top of it is just appears as a flat railroad bed a person could very well not even know it was there, but even though we knew it was there, the embankments were too steep to descend.
Determined to find a way in, we returned to the highway and found where it crossed the Little Yoho Stream. As it was during the dryness of August, last summer, we were able to walk the distance, up the very dry stream bed to the arched bridge. The distance wasn't great and it was well worth the trek. Upon our return we could view the more modern version of a corregated steel arch that is under the highway where it crosses the Little Yoho Stream.
